Ludhiana: A one-day seminar on “Organic Farming: Opportunities and Constraints in Kandi Region of Punjab” is organized by Punjab Agricultural University at the Regional Research Station, Ballowal Saunkhri, district Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar. Progressive farmers from Kandi area and officers from allied departments, the scientists from PAU, Ludhiana; Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) of Kandi region are participated in the seminar.
Kandi area has a large potential for the organic farming, says Dr Manmohanjit Singh, Director, Regional Research Station (RRS), Ballowal Saunkhri. He observed that the fertilizer consumption per hectare is very low as compared to rest of the state and the area under organic farming is only about 2000 acres in Punjab.
For higher benefits and to conserve natural resources, Dr Singh urged the farmers to promote organic farming. He also informed the delegates about various initiatives, taken by the RRS, for the benefit of the farming community in the Kandi region.
Various aspects of organic farming and recommendations of PAU for production of quality organic produce, are discussed by Dr S.S. Walia, Senior Agronomist, PAU.
The role of beneficial insects in agriculture are highlighted by Dr K.S. Sanga, Senior Entomologist, PAU and also urged the farmers to avoid use of chemicals and instead promote use of bio control agents in agriculture.
Progressive farmers also shared their experiences on successful production and marketing of organic produce.
